I've noticed something during all these months of promoting the FF6 Retranslation project in other forums. When I start a thread about the project, about 10-30% of the people who reply say "What's the point? They barely censored anything from it". Just because FF3 US had such a good storyline people automatically think 'the game wasn't censored much'. They don't know someone who knows the Japanese language, who had just so happened to play FF6 Jap all the way through. They're just automatically assuming their point of view from playing FF3 US. I just find that so annoying. >_< Classic gaming fans can be so stubborn. It takes a while for me to explain to them the many advantages and highlights of the FF6 Retranslation. My best explanation is "Wouldn't you rather play the FF6 Retranslation instead of the same old FF3 US?". That works with emulation enthusiasts, but people who like the real thing better will always say SNES FF3 or PSX FF6 is the best FF6 experience. Oh well. (continues to promote the FF6 Retranslation)

With games, people tend to favor whatever version they play first. It's especially pronounced with games like FF6, because the official translation isn't riddled with Engrish (just lots of inaccuracy). Of course, that being said, there are also people who realize that readability isn't the only important thing about a translation. And it's a very small portion, from the sounds of it, who are not interested because they've played FF3US already. That was more or less expected to happen, as it is with any retranslation effort.

I can't necessarily say either way whether I think the retranslation is justified -- it certainly wouldn't be worth my time to try to do, but I will definitely play it. Saying that the US version is a bad translation or that Ted is a poor translator though... All I can really say here is that the FF3's script read beautifully, regardless of what may or may not have been cut out of it, and you have to understand the restrictions that Nintendo had Mr. Woolsey working under. "The video game industry, streamlined and censored for your protection." Bah.
I still want to see your version before I judge for myself whether or not it was worthwhile. |

It's not always entirely hopeless to try to convert them though. I managed to get my friend who doesn't know the first thing about emulation interested in the re-translation.

Well there is never going to be a transltion project that everyone is into. Which brings me to the point of why I do what I do. I work on games that I want to play in English, and I put that work out to the public so others who feel the same can play that game in their own language. In this case being the accurate translation with all the features that Japanese gamers were allowed for FF6. It is too often accepted because we are used to it now after decades of it from the publishers/hardware people/religioug groups etc. It is commonly just taken as oh well they did what they could, and its a great game. So why should we bother playing it again, or working on a translation of the game. Why? Its because it could have been done accurately, and with all the same features as the original in the begining, and we English speaking gamers always get left out. Because people in suits and robes are deciding what we should be able to play in a video game. The fans have no say, hardly anyways. And that is the main motiviation for doing this and other future retranslations. I am not saying ted was a bad translator I am saying there were many conditions, restraints, and other issues put on him by these people. You will also see we are working on a variety of other games as well that dont have a translation at all in English, so we are doing our part there too. Noone can say that we havent contributed to the scene in that respect. It comes down to if you dont want to play the game dont play it. Wait for another title to be finished that doesnt have a translation yet. But dont judge us at RPGOne and Sky render for devoting our time to something we have such passionate beliefs in, when we are also contributing to many other translation projects. And when someone gives negative talk that is rude they can be referred here and the rules guidelines once again.
