I finally got my video card this morning and for the last 3 hours I've been trying to install it. I have onboard now and that makes things more confusing. My computer manufacturer's help line wont help me install it because it voids my warranty or something. I then disabled the onboard graphics through the device manager.
So I opened the case and plugged in the card in the agp slot
but when i booted the comp there was no signal.
So then I replugged in the card but there was still no signal.
I tried some web sites but they all say the same thing which I tried. do I need to flip some switch on the board or something?

hmm, well first, what card do you have?

second, AGP, usually onboard mainboards don't have an AGP port, so you need to get a PCI version.

Second, yes you will need to disable your onboard, but you can do that through winxp's device mananger.

usually you don't have to do anything physically to disable the onboard, check your mainboard's manual.

it should be very simple to do, just make sure that you are putting the card in the correct slot, and that you put the card in all the way, you should hear a pop.

btw, if it is an agp port, make sure you move the little lever on the right end of the slot right, so you can put the card in, it is sort of like a lock http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

yeah I have an agp slot(it's brown w/ white lock thing you described)
I think the problem was that I didn't hook it up right because windows didn't even detect it. What exactly do I do w/ the white lock? do I hook it up with the hook thing on the end of the card?

And when you disable the onboard through the device manager Is it still supposed to be active when you hook up
the monitor cable?(was for me)

AGP should be as easy to install as PCI i installed my new card last week in 5mins was easy and then i just downloaded the drivers from the nivida websitebut i found a manual for AGP installationread it 2 u c if that helps ok here it is
1. if you install your (Name of card) in a new system
2. shut down your computer and unplug all the cables and     electric cords
3. remove cover from computer chassis
4. locate AGP bus expansion slot
5. Remove cover of the expansion slot
6. anchor the board's mounting  bracket to the chassis using the screw from the cover.
7. position the card directly over the AGP slot or PCI slot for PCI version. Insert the bus connector on the edge of the card. Firmly but gently press the bus connector on the bottom of the card down into the slot.
8. place the cover back onto the computer chassis.
9. connect the anolog monitor's 15-pin VGA connector tothe card and fasten the plug
10. connect all the other cards/devices and reconnect  all the cables and cords
11. go to the software installation section

hope this helps

k, the chatchie thingie, when it is moved the the right, it is unlocked, so move the thing to the righ, then put in the card, make sure that the card is alligned properly, (it may have to go in upside down http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif) then when it is securly in, move the lever to the left to lock the card in, then hook everything up the old way (no the monitor in the new gfx card yet) then boot up windows, open the device mananger and select disable this item, on the old gfx card, you may also have to switch the monitor cord back and forth between cards, don't worry, it won't hirt anything if the PC is on http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif *Also make sure that when the computer first turns on right before the bios screen or your manufacturers screen, you should see your card name in the upper left hand corner, exact modle number. *and series number.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: O ya, when you turn on the computer after you have the card in, the old card should still be in controle, and you may notice windows when you maxamize them coming up on the new gfx card, don't worry, just move the mouse all the way to either the left or right, and the mouse will appear on the new card, so you can disable the old card.  The old card should be active up to that point!

O, one more thing, make sure you screw the card in with a screw http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
