okay now that i have stolen the interplay motto..

from a gamers point of view (also keeping in mind emulation, image editing and web design) would you recommend the new AMD mp's or the Intel P4? Is there REALLY a noticebale difference in the mp performance compared to their architecture? Or is it mainly just fluff coming from the marketing dept?

Thinking about upgrading comps, P4's are expensive but I remember AMD's having problems when I last bought my P3. It now seems many people favor AMD chips... is this preference really based on performance or just boredom of intell and the shortcomings of their promises?

My AMD has been behaving itself lately... The same cannot be said about my TNT2... For crying out loud, it lags as fast as there are any transparency effects on screen... http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Well the P4 r fast for gamers, the AMD's are fast for general software. P4 cost a lot, AMD's don't cost a lot. Their peformance it is different with the type of os u have. AMD work the best with WinXP, P4 work better with Win98. Well there's the genral 411. The taste & speed is different for every1 so i won't say which 1 i would buy.

ok now for the non-sense

hehe... i guess i should stick with 1 nick, my other nicks, KilaRay _ Angel316 _ killer _ Apathy. ^_^

... wait wait wait... are you saying you double as the little german kid as your clark kent/bruce wayne alter ego? hehe... that would be funny as I would not have suspected it... (except for the zero avatars)

Okay the following is from the well known mp comparison chart (just the p4 and XP columns)

Athlon XP:
# of transistors: 37.5 M
CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz,
L2 Cache: 384 kb full speed,
Front Side Bus Speed: 266 MHz,
FPU: Very Strongs,
Integer: Very Strong

P4:
# of transistors: 55 M
CPU Speed: 1.4- 2.2 GHz,
L2 Cache: 256 kb full speed,
Front Side Bus Speed: 400 MHz,
FPU: N/A,
Integer: N/A

So okay they have no numbers for calculation strength of the P4 when it comes to FPU and Int... I dont know why that is... otherwise the bus speed is quite impressive. And yea it does have a smaller cache...

Now I'm surprised when angel says the p4 is better with w98... wouldn't optimising your mp for an allmost obsolete (from M$ point of view) OS be considered.. uh... bad manners?

So while the numbers may look impressive for the P4, I'm thinking that the pipeline trick they used to boost up the speed is going to cause some problems when I have ps6, flash5, dreamweaver and fireworks all open at the same time and feel like checking my mail on outlook and surfing the net... boom... but again that's where the buss speed comes into play I guess, since all those will be dwelling (mostly) in the RAM.

I'm thinking that at the rate the mp speed is going nowadays if I get anything less than 2 Gigs, it will become obsolete very fast... (like my PIII 750 gone low end in 1yr.)

Do you know if they have XP processors for laptops as of yet? I know they don't have p4's yet.

AMD's are good for all around computing also...lets see here, what's my uptime as of now?

(Uptime) Uptime:(1day 19hrs 21mins 36secs) Record Uptime:(1day 19hrs 21mins 35secs) Up since:(Sunday, the 3rd of March 2002 at 06:30pm) «~{Polaris IRC Uptime Addon}~»

And thats with no reboots, and i've been playing emus, games, music, surfing the net, oh yeah which reminds me

(Connection) Connected:(Cero's ISP) Connection:(Lucent Win Modem) Speed:(28800bps) Online:(1*Day 15*Hours 38*Minutes 19*Seconds) Download:(52.82MB) Upload:(177.71MB) «~{Polaris IRC 2002}~»

I've held this dial-up connection for a solid day http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

In reply to ksk h2o[B]:

If you think the numbers of p4 are better, well maybe... but it doesn't mean that the performance will be better to.

Looking for a lot of 3dMark 2002 Benchmarking results, the AMD's performance were better than the P4,

if you have a 1.6Ghz AMD you need about a 1.8Ghz P4 to work at the same speed...

Anyway, I don't know why, but my next buy will be an AMD XP

About one year ago AMD started to overtake Pentium with their Athlons which had a faster speed than the present entium at that time. I think it's because of this that ppl prefer or think the AMD is better. Pesonally I have had an AMD K6 which had some compatability problems with hardware, but as I didn't have a pentium then neither do I have an AMD now I can not compare. ALthough I do believe that when I had my AMD K6, pentium were definately ahead in the race for speed. AMD definately had small compatability problems with specific pieces of hardware but I don't know if they have fied it. I don't think I'd buy AMD again and I'd go for Pentium as they are cheaper (and as price is proportional to performance) they may not be as good. My pentium 500 has been going for a good 3 years now and although I have to reformat my hard drive and replace it many times, my processor is still working in peak condition.

I am also surprised to find that the Pentium doesn't work as well as AMD on XP. This would link up with the fact that XP has compatibility problems anyway and I would go for ME. Remember the processor is only part of a computer. The main things that determine life time of a computer are, Software, OS, HD quality, Restoring software.

I'm not surprised to hear the AMD's outperform the P4 since the latter uses the famed 20 stage pipeline... It seems that by changing their chip architecture, Intel is trying to push a new type of programming that would be more compatible with their processors. I read left and right that future streaming media applications will perform better on this insanely long piplenine of the p4... yeah... just exactly how-future... like tomorrow-future or "3g" or digital HDTV future. becuse if it is the latter I think I still have room to buy the competitions chips and use them now untill they become obsolete by the time those things happen.

all right my turn...:D, I am currently running an AMD 1.33ghz, I have had no problems with it at all, no complaints, It playes n64 emulators perfectly, (GE on pj64 v1.4 at 60fps). as for regular pc games, very good (then again it also depends on your gfx card)
