ok, now i've reverse engineered the font routine of star ocean.
and it seem that's possible to make vwf on SOBS. :)

Originally, each letter would take up the same amount of screenspace.

With a VWF, each letter only takes up as much screen space as necessary.
Here's some pictures of the original game, notice that the patched version leaves room to fit more text on each line.
