Really stupid MAME help

I have mame 32 set and ready to go, running gauntlet 2 to test...using 6 button pro pad for now.
Problem is...what do I hit to add credits or to put a game on free play?
I cant get the help file to come up and the read me only lists the updates.

isnt the readme supposed to tell you what the buttons are?
