Bandai announces the Swan Crystal, an upgraded version of its WonderSwan handheld that is scheduled for a July release in Japan.
*
On Wednesday, Bandai announced that it will release an upgraded version of its WonderSwan handheld called the Swan Crystal. The handheld unit will incorporate a 2.8-inch reflective TFT LCD screen (a 2.5-inch FSTN LCD was used in the WonderSwan Color), and it will be equipped with a four-channel stereo sound (the WonderSwan Color had monaural sound). Only one AA battery is required, and it should power the handheld for approximately 15 hours.
The Swan Crystal will also be backward-compatible with the WonderSwan Color and WonderSwan titles. The company expects to ship 500,000 units by the end of March 2002 in Japan. The company has also announced its upcoming software lineup:

Mobile Suit Gundam Vol. 3: A Baoaqu - May 25
Gransta Chronicle - June 13
X Card of Fate - June 27
Riviera: The Promised Land - July 12
Arc the Lad: Kijin Fukkatsu - July
From TV Animation One Piece: Grand Battle Swan Coliseum - July
Inuyasha: Fu-un E-maki - July
Front Mission - July
Digimon Ver. WonderSwan Color - August
Crash Gear Turbo - August
SD Gundam Generation - September

The Swan Crystal is scheduled to hit store shelves in Japan on July 12 with a price point of 7,800 yen (approximately $61). The handheld unit is scheduled to be on display at the Tokyo Toy Show 2002, which will held at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center starting tomorrow. We'll have first impressions from the show floor, so stay tuned.

Hopefully this means they will be tempted to release that here (since it should be as good as the GBA with its ONE BATTERY feature and cheap price) and that means the FF games too http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif But I can only dream...

BTW Square seemed to have stopped supporting it or something, since that list of games doesn't have any Square games.

cool one battery.
How big is the screen on a GB?

2.9" TFT reflective screen on a GBA

2.3" TFT reflective screen on a GBC

So the SC screen is 1/10 of an inch smaller than a GBA http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif Can you even tell the difference?

Here's a pic:

GBA has more games... Thats about it. Everything else is about the same, except that the WS/WSC/SC has two more buttons and uses only one battery.

I doubt it. Bandai didn't say anything about it in the announcement.

In my opinion, it doesn't seem like much of an upgrade. I think it's great for me though, cuz I don't have a wonderswan color, and I can honestly say I didn't like the look of the old system. http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I like the look of this one...sleek. I've got a GBA, and I really don't care which system the FF series is on, I'll buy them for whichever one so long as it's in english......

No, Square will indeed be remaking some of their classic games on the GBA, including possibly Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu2/3, Final Fantasy Tactics (this one seemed to have been confirmed by Matsuno but later unconfirmed... hmm). I am sure FF5 and 6 would be remade as well.

They started a long time ago and even released some screenshots of it. But then they were silent about it until a few months ago, when they said its been delayed because of production problems. What that means is unknown.
