View Full Version : Emulation...

This has been on my mind for some time now. Ya know, emulation is probably one of the coolest things to happen to the PC since DIMM RAM (or the cd-writer). WOW! Just download your favourite console game and get the appropriate emulator to play it with. But I wonder some time, when I look at the forums and some guy claims to have over a thousand roms, how many of those do they actually play? Appox. how many roms have any of you downloaded in the last year or so and how many of those roms that you've downloaded have you actually finished? I've probably downloaded about 30 - 50 roms (snes, GBA, N64, Genesis etc.) in the last year and I’ve only finished about 10 - 15 of them. Now imagine that you actually bought one or two of those games. Wouldn’t you play it to the very end and find every last item and secret and unlock every character and/or level there is? I know I would. It’s just that you get the games so easily so who cares if you don’t finish it. When I downloaded Zelda:Oot I played it (using Ultra HLE) for about 3 days and then stopped and went on with other roms and PC games. But when I heard all the hype that was made over the game I immediately continued playing it again ‘till I actually finished it (with allot of trouble ‘cos UltraHLE had some BIG bugs that I had to bypass using cheats here and there). But this only happens to the minority of the roms that I download. What usually happens is I download a rom, play it ‘till I get stuck then download another rom, play it ‘till I get stuck etc… So now I have all these unfinished games, which I have no idea of how good (or bad) some of them really are. My argument is that you only really appreciate a game if you buy the game, but if you don’t have the money (like myself, I only buy the REALLY GOOD titles) at least finish the rom you downloaded and appreciate all the work that has been put into it. http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/alien.gif http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rocketQ3.gif
Oh yeah, and the same goes for warez...

Yes, rom-collectors are apparently a big thing in the emulation scene. They would just download every so-called Good rom, MAME rom, TOSEC rom and so on, and just leave it in their computer or whatever like collectors of other things usually do. They don't usually play all of them (in fact a large percentage of roms that exist don't work), but I guess they just like having them around. There are sources that provide every single rom that exists to you, so its not that hard.

That's the thing about die-hard collecting. You just don't get around to using your collectors items. Shame, really.

I collect roms. Right now i have 65979 ROMs and 24 out of 30 complete Good ROM sets. its taken me a long time to get this far. The reason i collect them is just to be able to play them and share them ith other people.
heres my rommanager from IRC
[GoodSets][Missing ROMs 6037/72016][CPC 852/7046][N64 2/1871][GBx 2796/6115][GBA 181/1920][PCE 202/1503][Gen 2004/3301][Complete sets 24/30][Excluded ROMs 5249]
it uses the miss files form the GoodXXX utilitys
**edit** I try to play as many of my roms as i can. as brightman said alot of them are unplayable. but i always play the *popular* games form start to finish like Mario 64 Zelda etc.

i dont see anything wrong with getting whole sets.. i have a flash linker for my gba.. so when i wanna put something on my cart so i can play it i dont wanna go looking for it ..when in all actuality i already have it... everything else im pretty much trying to make decent compilations of for dreamcast . it helps to have everything so you can sort thru (u) (PD) (T-ENG) .. although im nowhere near a completist like rodney.. it is nice to know you have every game for every givin system.. although when i do brag about it ..normal people seem to look at me like im some kinda weirdo http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I usually manage to complete most of my games in a few hours... but usually those hours are from 10-30 min. here 10-30 min. there... and there is the games I have that are... there... I have no clue what they are... and then there is the fact that I'm trying to learn C/C++, perl, CGI, and a few other various things on my comp... and I have 2 active RM2k projects (1 inactive)... and I have school... and I have other non-emulation games I play... and getting SZ-WBot to be three times as good as EmuXBot2... and... My time is screwed...
But I do manage to get atleast 4 hours of sleep a day http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Just imagine when big HD space and High speed connections rule over the internet... PPl will Start sending PS1/PS2/XBOX/GCUBE/DREAMCAST like they were roms.

Well, there's also the BANDWIDTH problem. If high-speed connections continue to progress though (optic-fibers?) then it's a possibility.
