View Full Version : About the sound emulation

It is possible that I am terribly mistaken about this, but the sound still seems to need quite an improvement. Take the japanese emu NGPocket, for example (one of the best NGP emus along with NeoPop): its sound is very diferent in many ways. I can get nearly perfect tunes with NGPocket, while in NeoPop there a strange "bell" riging all the time in my right speaker (when I am using stereo sound. In monaural mode, the "bell" sounds in both sides). I do not know, it seems to be wrong in some way I cannot describe better than that.
I apologize for I cannot help with this, would not like just to be complaining, but to help too. Well, I hope I am able to help in one way or another by reporting my problems and bugs.
Thanks.

The timing also seems a little fast compared to NGPocket in places (Card Fighters Clash intro) and I can hear the beeping too, but it's still superior to NGPocket for me since NGPocket skips like crazy...

but if u play snk vs. capcom the sound seems 2 be ok cuz the bell sounds dat u hear on the intro, it goes wit the song and on the letters dat appear in the background.

I think the beeping isn't actually random. Listening to the few games that have the problem and work with both NeoPop and NGPocket (SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash and Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure) I found that where NeoPop (and Koyote) put a beep, NGPocket put a drum sound (probably using noise simulation).
Maybe a missing sound feature has been spotted?

Yeah, you're right... It does seem that a certain noise is replaced with the beeps.
But still, Neopop is eons ahead of NGPocket now. The only problem with the sound seems to be this high-pitch beep anyway.

Thanks for the info guys *http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif *- i'll look right into it.
There is a good chance that the sound emulation isn't perfect because i'm often not sure how it's supposed to sound on the real machine.
I'll look at the games you've mentioned and see what's happening.
(One other thing to consider is that perhaps NGPocket is doing some sort of low-pass filtering to remove some of the high-pitched noises? - but that is a different matter.)

I don't believe so. Some high-pitched noises that should be there appear, but others disappear. Sonic Pocket Adventure has a big example of this just in the intro.
I've decided to attach NGPocket 0.0.1213 (registered version) to this message. It may be illegal, but the author vanished 3 years ago and is Japanese. Weigh up the risks.

I think that the sound emulation on NeoPop is better than on NG Pocket! I compared the sound for the SNK vs Capcom Card Fighter's Clash and NeoPop sounds clear, while NG Pocket has a slight buzzing noise (its sound is still very good though). Though it is true that NeoPop does have some kinda ringing noise.

One thing I will boast about is that I managed to removed the pops that occur during DAC playing (ie. sound samples) in NGPocket. I can at least be a bit smug about that.
As for the sound errors, well I did use the driver from Mame, it's not entirely my fault http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Well, the high pitched sound is fine, but it makes some games off. I have Biomotor Unitron and in comparison to the sound emulation, there is supposed to a low pitched sound instead. It makes the intro a little weird. Otherwise, its fine.

In SvsC - MOTM, not only the ringing beep is presented in the intro, but in every other song throughout the game. That is the result I get. Of course, NeoPop emulation is indeed in a higher level, though.
I believe you guys are quite right about the low-pass filter probability. Perhaps NGPocket contains it in one way or another.

I've fixed the sound problems, verified with an MP3 of the real "Sonic Adventure" - I hope everything else is correct too.
BTW. "Death Metal" your avatar picture is cool, who is it though? I don't recognise it.
See version 0.64 for better sound.

Hiya, neopop_uk!
Yay, version 0.64 has no beep sounds!! Thank you very much! To help the continuing maturity of the emulator, I would suggest now scanlines in the screen, or even the original mode of the harware, do you know? I mean, like that "Enable original GBA mode" option in that GBA emu DreamGBA. Or, for a start, I remember version 0.57 had borders in the screen. I think it looks better with them. Well, anyway, those are just my personal thoughts and opinions. http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Regarding your question, my avatar is Hayate from the anime Pretear. http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Yeah those borders were pretty good, but they disappeared when I 'optimised' the gfx code. I miss them though, so i'll be putting them back in soon!
I'm not sure what you mean by 'original mode'...
I haven't heard of Pretear, in case anyone was wondering mine is from 'Blackjack' (which I also haven't seen), i'm still not sick of the picture, which is rare!

Hey neopop_uk,
I have translated the emulator texts into Brazilian Portuguese, which is my mother language. I'm attaching the file in this post for you to check it out. I have done some testing, and it seems that everything is OK for my language. At first some texts were off-limits, but I have corrected them now to fit their available spaces.
As for the 'original mode' I mensioned, it is kind of an scanlined screen, but both horizontally as well as vertically. It is like drawing every pixel in separate boxes... Sorry, my narrow english does not allow me to explain further than that. http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Oh, I'll be changing my avatar soon, you can use it if you like. http://www.emuxhaven.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
